Through The Repellent Fence

2017 / 1hr 14m / Documentary
Directed by Sam Wainwright Douglas

SYNOPSIS

Along a contested stretch of desert at the U.S.-Mexico border, a line of towering inflatable spheres briefly reimagined what a boundary could mean.

ABOUT THE FILM

Through the Repellent Fence follows the art collective Postcommodity as they conceive and construct a two-mile land art installation that visually bridges the U.S.-Mexico border. Installed across Indigenous lands, the temporary work required negotiation with local communities, governments, and border authorities.

The film captures both the logistics of building at this scale and the cultural and political dialogue that shaped the project. It shows how land art and spatial design can intervene in geopolitical narratives, using scale and symbolism to question exclusion and briefly redraw the meaning of place.
