Protest / Architecture
2023 / 18m / Documentary Short
Directed by Oliver Hardt
SYNOPSISA look across how decades of global uprisings, streets, plazas, and public squares have been transformed into living blueprints for resistance, where ordinary materials and collective action reshape the built environment in real time.
ABOUT THE FILMProtest/Architecture surveys the spatial tactics of twelve protest movements between 1968 and 2023, using archival footage to trace how barricades, camps, and self-built structures become centers of collective action. From makeshift fortifications to sprawling encampments, the film reveals how activists occupy, defend, and reconfigure public space in moments of upheaval.
By foregrounding the ingenuity embedded in temporary structures, Protest/Architecture demonstrates how space itself becomes both medium and message, and how design, whether improvised or deliberate, shapes the power and persistence of social movements.
