1989 / 1h 59m / Documentary
Directed by Peter Cohen
SYNOPSISA haunting examination of Nazi Germany’s deliberate use of architecture, spectacle, and visual culture to construct a totalitarian worldview, revealing how design was weaponized to manufacture ideology and control.
ABOUT THE FILMThe Architecture of Doom examines the role of aesthetics in the rise and execution of Nazi power. Tracing Adolf Hitler’s early artistic ambitions through the monumental architecture and controlled cultural production of the Third Reich, the film places design at the center of a regime intent on imposing a singular, “purified” vision of society.
From choreographed rallies and colossal building plans to propaganda and mass media, it reveals how visual language shaped perception, glorified authority, and normalized exclusion and violence. The film serves as a cautionary mirror, demonstrating the immense influence design holds when absorbed into authoritarian systems to enforce hierarchy and suppress difference.

“One of the multifold horrors of this material is the reminder that the connection between aesthetics and action doesn’t exist in some abstract, philosophical realm.”
